A step-by-step guide on how to use a female condom - Bhavyajyoti Chilukoti

Unlike male condoms, female condoms are not a popular choice of contraception by women. And a major reason for this is the lack of knowledge about how to use a female condom. Contrary to belief, female condoms are quite simple and easy to use although you may find it little tricky at first, but after using it a couple of times, you will be comfortable. Also, female condoms are thin as compared to male ones (so no need to doubt about sexual pleasure) as they are made up of nitrile and not latex. Here’s a step-by-step guide on using female condoms. Step #1: While buying a condom, don’t forget to check the expiration date on the pack. Step #2: Before you open the pack, make sure you gently squeeze the pack so that the lubricant spreads evenly within the condom. Now, tear open the packet as directed (in most cases, an arrow is indicated at the right top corner of the pack) to remove the condom. Step #3: Although the condom is lubricated already, you can put a spermicide or a lubricant on the condom to further lower your chances of getting pregnant. This will also make it easier to insert the condom. Wondering how female condoms work? Here’s your answer. Step #4: To insert the condom, find a comfortable position such that you can easily access your vagina. For this, you can squat, put one leg on a chair and other on the ground, sit on the edge of the chair or even lie down. Step #5: Once you get the position right, now squeeze the sides of the inner ring at the closed end together. The condom has a thick inner ring and a thin outer ring. The condom might slip because of the lubricant, but make sure you hold it firmly before inserting it into vagina. Step #6: Now insert the condom into your vagina (just how you insert a tampon). You can use your finger to push the condom as far as possible so that it reaches the cervix. Step #7: Once the condom reaches the cervix, you won’t feel it anymore as the condom expands naturally. However, if you still feel it inside, it means that you haven’t inserted it properly. In such cases, remove and insert properly. Step #8: If you are done with inserting the condom, then slowly pull your finger out. But before you do so, ensure that outer ring of the condom is hanging an inch outside the vagina. If that’s not the case, check if the inner ring is properly inserted or not. Step #9: Now you are ready for sex. Make sure you guide your partner’s penis into the condom and not into the space between the condom and the wall of the vagina. You don’t have to be careful with your movement as the condom may move from side to side (which is quite normal). But if you feel that the condom has come out or become loose, you can re-insert it, if your partner hasn’t ejaculated yet. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to have sex. Step #10: Once you are done with the act, remove the condom and discard. Here’s how to remove a condom. Hold the outer ring of the condom properly and gently twist it. This will ensure that the semen remains inside the pouch of the condom and doesn’t leak out. Now, slowly remove the condom and discard. Do not flush the condom. Just like the male ones, female condoms should be used only once. ...and enjoy safe sex with your partner.
